Duration 12 months. Closing Date 19 September 2011 Under the guidance of the Communications Specialist and the Project Coordinator of the Media Capacity Building Project, the Communications Officer will provide the following forms of communications support:
Manage the production of the AAP newsletter (electronic and print), including writing and/or assigning articles, editing drafts, securing photographs and graphics, translation, layout and distribution
Provide quality control on major AAP documents with respect to use of language and design
Manage contracts with writers, editors, translators, designers, and electronic media producers, among other suppliers, in the production of the newsletter and other communications products
Assist in the development of strategic planning and creative development of the AAP communications program with a view to the particular communications opportunities presented by mobile social media, in addition to traditional media channels
Provide communications advice including the identification of emerging challenges and opportunities requiring a communications response, and proposals for appropriate reactive and/or proactive communications initiatives
Draft key messages, press releases, media backgrounders, press kits and other materials for journalists
Draft and manage the production of AAP advocacy products
Assist in the planning and implementation of special events
Required Selection Criteria
Advanced university degree in Communications (journalism, marketing or public relations) or International Relations, Political Science, Environment and/or Sustainable Development
At least five years’ experience as a writer and/or editor. Seven years of relevant work experience preferably in combination with a bachelor’s degree, may substitute for the
requirement for a master’s degree
Excellent command of English with highly-developed writing skills
Knowledgeable of major issues in international development and familiarity with the United Nations are assets
Self-motivated and proven ability to take initiative
Strong organizational and time-management skills
Ability to work in a team, under pressure and against tight deadlines
Strong computer skills (MS Word, In design, Publishing, Content Management Systems, Excel, Adobe Acrobat and Dreamweaver).
